For all the current talk of “law and order,” and “crime and punishment,” the actual workings of Canada’s criminal courts and the Canadian criminal justice system remain largely unknown or are distorted by the media and popular culture.

Except when an exceptional case arises, the criminal courts are the most ignored and neglected of all our major public institutions.

I’m Marion E. Lane, a former teacher, lawyer and criminal court judge. Now retired, I propose to write about current issues affecting the criminal system. My aim is to provide an insider’s guide to the criminal courts.
